Stop code 0x24 vista

On some machines you get a Vista Recovery menu option which will try to automatically fix any problems. But examining the MBR reveals illegal values suggesting that it is knackered. In XP land I would boot to prompt from the cd and run fixmbr to sort it out. Could be corrupted files.

It is more than likely corrupted files but it looks like you will need to remove the disk to resolve. A re-install with format would fix the issue but I'm guessing you have some important files that would need to be removed! I had this with my media center pc the other week with a 1TB drive, in the end I stuck another small cos it was all I had kicking around disk in, installed windows, put the original one back in and copied off the files I needed, formatted and reinstalled vista on the 1TB drive and it's all been working fine since.

But if I can't boot to that with the bad drive attached or I get a blue screen. And I can't hotplug in the bad drive or.. I get a blue screen. I have a external SATA caddy which is useful for attaching a disk like this.

Where abouts are you? I doubt anyone here cares, but on the off chance you ever find yourself in a similar situation then….

But I'll never get those two days back! This topic has 17 replies, 6 voices, and was last updated 12 years ago by GrahamS. Viewing 18 posts - 1 through 18 of 18 total. GrahamS Full Member. Heeeeeeellp… So I was using my PC th other night. Hit the switch to froce a reboot. Blue screen. Oh dear. Reboot and try Last Known Good Config. Reboot and try Safe Mode. Reboot and try Safe Mode Command Prompt. That worked and the drive diagnostics passed. Any ideas where I go from here? Any help greatly appreciated!

The System File Checker is a utility in Windows that allows users to scan for corruptions in Windows system files and restore corrupted files.

If it see errors in the execution of driver code, it proactively creates an exception to allow that part of the driver code to be further scrutinized. The driver verifier manager is built into Windows and is available on all Windows PCs. To start the driver verifier manager, type Verifier at a command prompt.

You can configure which drivers you would like to verify. The code that verifies drivers adds overhead as it runs, so try and verify the smallest number of drivers as possible. For more information, see Driver Verifier. In the past, another possible cause of this stop code is depletion of nonpaged pool memory. If the nonpaged pool memory is completely depleted, this error can stop the system.

However, during the indexing process, if the amount of available nonpaged pool memory is very low, another kernel-mode driver requiring nonpaged pool memory can also trigger this error.
